Japanese climber, 80, becomes oldest atop Mount Everest
KATHMANDU, NEPAL: An 80-year-old Japanese man became the oldest person to climb Everest breaking the record set by a Nepali who climbed Everest at the age of 76 in 2008.

Yuichiro Miura reached the top of the 8,848 metre-Everest at about 8:45am on Thursday morning along with his physician son Gota, mountaineering official Gyanendra Shrestha said from the base of Everest.

Miura had earlier reached the top of the 8,848-metre world's highest peak in 2003 and 2008 when he was 70 and 75 years old.

The oldest woman to climb Everest is Japanese woman Tamae Watanabe who set the record last year when she was 73.

Before beginning Miura had said earlier this month said over the phone from the base of the mountain "I am still healthy and strong. I think I have a good chance to reach the summit of Everest," despite having had a heart surgery in January this year and broken his hip in an accident two years ago.

While had said as preparation for the climb he had been doing special training in Tokyo lifting 5 kg load on each leg and walking three times a week with a load of 25 to 30 kilo on his back.

"I have a dream to climb Everest at this age," he had said. "If you have a dream never give up. Dreams come true."

Earlier this month two Indian 21-year-old women from Dehradun - Nunshi Malik and Tashi Malik - became the first twins to climb Everest. Altogether 80 Indians are attempting to climb Everest this year, according to Nepalese mountaineering officials.
